How To Create An Old World Patina Look
We acquired this old vintage Lane hexagon side table from an estate in Denver, Colorado. This hexagon table features a glass top inlay and a lower shelf with a rattan inlay. The table stands on legs turned to mimic a bamboo shape, supported by decorative brass pieces. The side table was a little scuffed, but the glass top inlay was in great condition for her age. Overall, she was a strong, sturdy piece.
Decisions, Decisions : What Color Should I Paint Her?
After we brought the side table home, it sat in our shop for several weeks while I completed other projects. Every day I would walk by her wondering to myself ‘What color should I paint her?’.
As time went by, the vision finally came to me ~ an Old World Patina look! I have always loved a beautiful patina and Old World style decor. Why not turn this vintage piece into just that ~ a stunning Old World Faux Patina side table! Her legs were already being supported by beautiful decorative brass pieces. I would faux paint her decorative brass supports and rings around her bamboo style legs to give her a faux patina finish.
PREPPING THE END TABLE FOR TRANSFORMATION
Just like with every project, I begin by cleaning the piece to make sure it is free of any dust. I use a soft cloth, light soap and water then allow the table to dry. Next, I lightly sand any scratches and wipe the entire piece down once again with a soft damp cloth and let it dry.
BASE COAT
I gathered together my paint and supplies. I would need my paint brushes, (2-inch, 1/4 inch, round brush, and waxing brush) Annie Sloan Louis Blue Chalk Paint, craft paints, and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Wax-Black.
For my custom blue, I mixed 1/2 cup of Annie Sloan Louis Blue Chalk Paint with 1 tablespoon of water, 1 tablespoon of Ceramcoat ‘Carribean Blue’, and 3 tablespoons of Anita’s ‘Deep Green Black’ Craft Paints.
The rattan lower shelf was a bit difficult to get full
Using a 2-inch paint brush I applied two coats of my custom blue mix to the exterior wood pieces of the side table. I allowed the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.
Faux Old World Patina
Using a soft cloth I applied Annie Sloan Black Chalk Wax over the custom blue, wiping off any excess to give her a distressed look.
Next, using a 2-inch brush I applied the same black wax to the crevices in the rings around her bamboo style legs and lifted and blended the excess with a soft cloth. Using my
Let dry overnight.
FINAL STEP
The next morning I applied two coats of Rust-Oleum Chalked Protection Top Coat Wax Matte Clear to protect her finish.
