I love to get creative when transforming used furniture pieces. This time I had a specific project in mind. I was on the hunt for a used piece of furniture to transform into an industrial steampunk style statement piece. I have a specific customer base who love industrial steampunk style furniture.
This stunning early 20th Century Jacobean Elizabethan Revival Buffet has been meticulously hand painted in General Finishes Lamp Black then lightly wiped-back to expose its natural wood tones to give it an aged dusty effect. The details enhanced with Modern Master’s Champagne and Oyster Metallics, and Dixie Belle’s Pacific, Steel Magnolia and Gold Digger Moonshine Metallics. The legs and bun feet enhanced with Champagne and Copper Metallics.
I’m always on the hunt for unique used furniture pieces to repurpose, makeover, or transform into stunning one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. My daily morning routine is to search through online local groups to see what I can find. As I’m scrolling through the listings I try to think outside the box.
My favorite places to shop for old vintage or antique furniture is thrift stores, garage sales, estate sales and local online groups. You never know what treasures you might find – and who doesn’t love a great bargain! As the saying goes ‘another man’s junk is another man’s treasure.’
Bev, a potential customer from New Hampshire, sent a message to me via Etsy after seeing one of my hand painted kitchen islands listed in our shop that had previously sold. She fell in love with it. The island was exactly what she was looking for. She wanted to know if I could PLEASE find another similar cabinet and paint it for her. I told her I would do my best. We both kept our fingers crossed.
If you come across an old server, buffet, sideboard, console table or dresser don’t overlook it. With a little imagination, chalk paint and rub on furniture transfers it can be repurposed into a beautiful kitchen island.
Happy New Year everyone! Now that the Holidays are over I’m back to searching for unique pieces of furniture to transform into stunning one-of-a-kind pieces of artwork. My first stop was our local thrift store. I can always count on finding at least one piece of furniture to take home with me. As soon as I enter the thrift store ~ I put my blinders on and head straight to the back of the store where all the furniture is located. If I don’t stay focused, I become easily distracted by all the isles filled with miscellaneous items for sale.
It’s difficult for me to visit a thrift store, estate sale, or garage sale without finding a piece of long-forgotten furniture to take home with me to transform. I even find myself searching through Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist hoping to find that one unique piece. I no longer look at an old dusty, beat up, scratched, or dinged piece of furniture the same way. Instead, envision something special ~ a piece I would take home and lovingly and meticulously transform into a one-of-a-kind beautiful piece of art.
I love a good estate sale or thrift store find. How about you? Take for instance this long-forgotten piece we found at an estate sale in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado. The area boasts multi-million dollar homes. The buffet was being stored in the owner’s horse stables. It was in very rough shape when we found it–neglected for years, covered in dust, loose laminate on the top, back and front, knicks and dings, scratches, cobwebs, and partially broken bun feet on the bottom of two of the front legs.
Lost treasures!! When I was a little girl growing up in the ’60s, I remember my grandparents having a console cabinet similar to this one. You might even have one you inherited stored in your basement or garage gathering dust because it doesn’t go with your decor. If you do, this blog might inspire you to dust it off and transform it!
